KDE/Wacom Repeat Issue

From wiki.vacula.xyz

This page is a temporary scratchpad for a bug I'm encountering with my Wacom ExpressKey Remote.

Hey all! I'm encountering an issue with my Wacom ExpressKey Remote having intermittent "sticky" keypresses. Truthfully I've had the issue for a while now but I'm tired of trying to figure it out myself and the issue has become worse since switching to Wayland.

The issue primarily manifests when I use my Ctrl-Z undo hotkey within Krita (as that's what I use the most). I'll press it once and something will think I'm holding the key down and act accordingly by undoing a bunch of actions. This will usually last until either realize it's happening and press a different key, or not relize it and make a stroke on the tablet itself losing all of those redo actions. Both are often after 10+ inputs' worth of undos. It's quite annoying. (It used to only be Ctrl that would "stick", and would just be a mildly annoying color reselection. Since moving to Wayland, it's started repeating the Z part of the keybind and causing me to lose work.)

And to be clear of what I mean by intermittent: it can happen three times in 20 minutes, or not at all in 2 hours. I can't identify any specific trend to it happening.

Some quick system info:

  • KDE Plasma: 6
  • Krita: both the beta 6.0 from the Arch repos and the 5.3.x AppImages
  • Tablet (not that it's relevant): Wacom 27QHD

Things I've tried that have not helped:

  • Using a different Remote device
  • Using a different USB receiver device
  • Using a different USB port (using one on my mobo instead of the one on the back of the tablet)
  • Using a different Remove with a different receiver plugged into a different USB port (while the original receiver was disconnected)
  • Closing Fcitx5
  • Disabling global hotkey repeat
    • This one does *technically* work, but with the caveats that it seems to only last until I reboot (perhaps another bug) and that I don't really want to do this because having Ctrl-Z actually repeat undos is useful for me when I actually *want* it.
  • Binding the hotkey on the remote to the letter "W" so that it isn't trying to use a modifier key
  • Configuring the Remote button within Wayland to "Defer to Application" (doesn't seem to register anything within Krita)
